frequently asked questions
Botox is an injectable product composed of purified botulinum toxin. It is the most well-known injectable in a category referred to as “neuromodulators,” which also includes similar products like Dysport. It works by temporarily disrupting nerve signals to the muscles where it is injected, which means that patients can no longer make extreme facial expressions that cause lines, wrinkles, and thickened muscles. These are the wrinkles that form when you squint, frown, or smile, such as crow’s feet, glabellar lines in between your eyebrows (elevens), or horizontal forehead lines.
A neuromodulator, like Botox, can also be used to treat vertical lines on the neck called
platysma muscle bands and lower facial muscles such as the masseter muscle (to
lessen the squareness and fullness of the lateral jawline), wrinkles around the mouth,
chin dimpling/cobble stoning, scrunching lines at the top of the nose (bunny lines),
gummy smile and resting frowny face. It can also be utilized for a brow lift or flip up the
upper lip during a smile. It is also possible to lessen the effects of jaw pain (TMJ),
headaches, and excessive sweating in the underarms with neuromodulators.
Avoid anti-inflammatory/blood thinning medications, if possible, for a period of 2 weeks before treatment. Medications and supplements such as aspirin, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, and ginseng.
Typically, initial appointments last at least 30 minutes, but follow-ups will be shorter in duration.
A follow-up appointment is recommended 2 weeks after treatment to evaluate results.
Full results realized in two weeks.
Typically, every 3-6 months to maintain results.
Side effects are similar to other types of injections, like injection site pain, edema, redness, bruising, and mild numbness. If these immediate reactions do occur, they are typically short-lived.
With modern injection techniques, you can still freely express yourself and avoid the “frozen” look.
Many patients can benefit from neuromodulators, assuming that they do not have specific medical conditions such as bleeding disorders or certain allergies.
At Spa Docs, your safety is our number one concern. Before you receive injections, your health history, risks, and side effects will be reviewed to ensure that the product is safe for you. Serious side effects from Botox are extremely rare. It is the most common
cosmetic procedure performed world-wide, with estimates of nearly 3 million injections
per year.
