The frequency of the laser light is best absorbed by the dark-pigmented spots in the skin. The surrounding lighter skin does not absorb the light.  Your body naturally removes the shattered pigment from your skin, leaving you with a clearer and even-toned complexion.

An immediate result is typically noticed after the first treatment. Results increase over a period of 4-8 weeks.

There may be some mild stinging or snapping feeling but it is generally tolerable. The skin may feel sensitive and appear red after your laser session, like the feeling of a sunburn. 

After treatment, you are free to resume your daily activities. You should avoid sun exposure and use a 30 SPF sunscreen at all times during the course of the treatment.  It is recommended to avoid swimming or hot tubs for one week, as well as acid-based products and Retin-A or retinol products. 

The simple answer is yes. However, it does not prevent future discoloration. If you continue to have damage to your skin from sun exposure, acne, or other environmental factors, you may require future treatments. Post-treatment, you can protect your skin by wearing sunscreen every day and treating underlying issues like acne with prescription medication.

If you notice a new brown spot that is changing and has a different color and shape from other moles on your body, you should be examined by a dermatologist prior to any laser treatment.
